Welcome to Wingood Akitas' home page...

First thing, we are not a kennel.  We are a home that loves Akitas.

In 1994, at an AKC Dog Show in Beaumont, Texas, I paused as a line of about 10 Akitas walked in front of me, they were on their way to the ring.  As they passed I asked one of the handlers, "what breed is this?"  It was my first time to see Akitas and, in my opinion, they were the most beautiful dogs at the show.

In January of 1995, I am embarrassed to say, I purchased an Akita puppy on an impulse without really investigating the breed.  I did not have a clue what to expect.  I grew up in a home that loved dogs, little dogs, 2 dachshunds and 1 boston terrier.

My first Akita, Duke, was from Arkansas.  He was a wonderful Akita.  I hate to admit it but when he was about 1 year old I considered getting rid of him.  The puppy stage can be very trying; it lasts at the very least 12 months.  Also, as I said before I didn't understand many things about Akita characteristics and their behavior.  They are intelligent but extremely stubborn.  He was the most beautiful Akita I've had, in my opinion.  His heaviest weight was 184 pounds, he was amazing.  Our obedience teacher and our veterinarian, both, told me they had never dealt with an Akita with a better temperment.  I had no idea what a treasure I had in him.  He received a lot of love and our family spent a lot of time in the backyard with him (my children were small and played in the yard with him daily) but if I had it to do all over again, he would have been inside... I know we missed out on so much of his personality and I regret it terribly.

There are so many things to consider before you own an Akita.  On my Akita links page are links to many informative articles about the breed.  If you are thinking about adding an Akita to your family please learn about the breed first.  After they outgrow the cute puppy stage they are very hard to place into a new home.

Akitas are loyal to their family.  They are quiet for the most part, if they bark you should go and see what is wrong.  Only a very few times have my Akitas shown "scary" aggression toward strangers but it does happen occasionally.  You do need to be careful with them as they are large and powerful.

With all the "learn about the breed, the puppy stage is hard, they are stubborn, they are large & powerful, they need socialization, etc...." said... I have to say that I love this breed more than I can say.  No other breed compares to them in my opinion.  Once I thought I had this amazing, one-of-a-kind, Akita but after her death I found that my following Akitas are just as amazing.  I have also learned that the males, although their personality is different from the females, are wonderful too.  Hachi has changed my way of thinking about male Akitas because he has lived inside.  I can't emphasize enough that until an Akita lives in the house with you... you really don't know them or the treasure you have in them.

Hopefully you will enjoy my website.  You are welcome to call or email me with questions; I will be happy to help you if I can.

Update October 18th, 2011 -

We expecting a litter of Akita puppies on approximately October 24th.  It will be our last litter for a long while.  Sushi is getting older and we feel like this should be the last for her.  She is a great mother and has given us so many beautiful puppies but we are making a definite decision not to breed her again.  She is a big part of our family; we love her so much.

Hachi is a big, beautiful pinto with a big black head and flashy markings.  We may consider letting him be used as a stud.  If you have a beautiful AKC female who lives in the home with you, if you feed good food, if you are willing to let us come and see where the babies will be kept, & if you are going to be very careful who the babies will go home with... email me and we can talk about it  ;) .
